Hervé Niquet hadn't been back to Aldeburgh in over 20 years, and what a comeback!
3 concerts in 3 days in 3 different places.

Snape Maltings Concert Hall - Haendel's Water Music & Fireworks

"Snape is a far cry from London and the Alde is no Thames yet there was a palpable sense of occasion and the strings and wind skipped nimbly through the numbers before the horns burst upon the scene with some thrilling virtuosity.
For the Music for the Royal Fireworks the orchestra was augmented by a double bassoon and serpent. Pomp and pageant returned in the overture’s adagio. All sections of the orchestra blazed in the more extrovert passages and Herve Niquet’s engaging mix of conducting and showmanship brought the evening to a rousing conclusion."

Ely Cathedral - Benevolo's Missa Si deus pro nobis

This year, the festival returns for the first time in 54 years in the huge cathedral of Ely. More than 1,100 people came to experience this extraordinary concert because of its difficulty and the grandeur of the space.

"All this lavishness was assembled to bring us a rarity: a setting of the Mass by the early-17th-century Italian composer Orazio Benevolo. It’s a sumptuous piece in 16 vocal parts, used in every conceivable combination, with constant changes of instrumental colour.
The job of co-ordinating all these spatially dispersed groups fell to the group’s director Hervé Niquet. He had to conduct with the rigidity of an automaton just to hold everything together in the boomy acoustic of the cathedral, and to make sure we heard Benevolo’s numerous surprising changes of tempo. [...] more effective were the grand slow movements like the final Agnus Dei, where the details were like the flecks of foam on a vast sea-swell.

Grand though the Mass was, the real musical satisfactions of this concert for me lay elsewhere, in the small-scale pieces placed between the mass movements. There were the occasional moments of unadorned plainchant (sung in a beautifully florid, ornamented way), the extraordinary hollow soprano-and-trombone sound of Benevolo’s motet Regna Terrae, and motets by the better-known composers Palestrina and Monteverdi. Best of all was an austerely beautiful, purely instrumental canzona by another little-known composer, Girolamo Frescobaldi, where for once the virtuosity of the players could really shine."

Blythburgh Church - Charpentier'sTe Deum

In the Suffolk campaign in Blythburgh our concert was also a great success with a sunny summer evening with Rafael, the church cat, who joined Le Concert Spirituel's troops on stage during rehearsals.

"...really strange, crazy, funny, noisy" - just some of the ways that artistic director @HerveNiquet describes what French Baroque ensemble Le Concert Spirituel have in store for us at #aldefest. Last few tickets available. pic.twitter.com/BA52lU3sfh
