Comedy-ballet in three acts

Le Mariage forcé is the second comedy-ballet composed by Molière and his first real collaboration with Lully. The composition in successive "sketches" is still typical of the ballet de cour from which the comedy-ballet derives, and in this respect quite close to Les Fâcheux (1661).

By creating a subtle general movement alternating between acceleration and rest, Molière and Lully composed a work in which their mutual fantasies could be given free rein. This movement is the one that should animate the performers, but also the stage set-up to be transformed - evoking a "ville de théâtre", as mobile as the "sketches", as colourful as the characters and their costumes, as whimsical as the script.

Argument

Sganarelle, feeling his age coming on, is about to put an end to his celibacy, hoping to find in the ravishing Dorimène a wife to his liking - that is to say, at his exclusive disposal - to fulfil all the household's responsibilities without question, including, of course, the birth of a child! But the future wife does not see it that way. After she has explained to the baron how she envisages her future existence (...very free...), Sganarelle, worried, and even alarmed by an inauspicious dream, seeks advice from those around him: a close but sceptical friend, grandiloquent philosophers, fortune tellers and even a magician and his demons. When he finally decides to renounce this dangerous union, the father and brother of the beautiful girl, too happy to get rid of an uncontrollable daughter, force the fiancé to keep his promises with a baton!
